Haute-Couture Collections Take Paris Fashion Show By Storm

By Andrew Regan

Paris fashion week is now over and the latest fashion sensations for the autumn/winter 2006/07 season have been released.

The usual stars of the haute couture collections, such as the John Galliano designs for Christian Dior, did not disappoint. The Dior show was themed around medieval armour and the Italian renaissance, with a touch of Blade Runner thrown in. Helmets encrusted with jewels, glass beads and crystals, with silver foil, bin liners and pennants used to evoke a modernised sense of knights jousting while the ladies of the court, wearing make up influenced by the paintings of Van Eyck and Botticelli, paraded along the cat walk. Armorial style was further enhanced by milliner Stephen Jones who was brought in to create replicas of medieval armour using copper and brass through to even less traditional materials such as latex, beads and feathers.

Kylie Minogue delighted onlookers by gracing the Chanel show catwalk following her recent cancer recuperation. Karl Lagerfelds creations did not disappoint either with fantastic modern styled tweed creations, combined with denim boots and jeweled heels, three-quarter length coats, jeweled fingerless gloves which flirtatiously left the models shoulders bare, and tantalizing touches of brocade.

This year men were well represented in the fashion stakes, following on from years of conservative styling. Collections of monochrome suits, surfer style inspired prints and cutting-edge sportswear abounded with unisex portfolios presented in characteristic style by Jean Paul Gaultier, with possible Dior future designer, Kris Van Assche, displaying interchangeable his and hers suits.

Paris fashion is however more eternal than simply the high profile shows. A quick flight to Paris or a trip through the channel tunnel and this style centre of Europe can be within the grasp of any Brit aspiring to a little bit of European chic.

Paris is a fashion Mecca. All year round the styles in Paris are constantly changing, leading the way in clothing trends across the globe, but it is amazing to see this flamboyant city truly come alive with the arrival of the stars and the week long bourgeois festival of fashion turns the spotlight on this region. All the major fashion houses have stores located within the city, with most situated in and around the Champs-Elyses area on Avenue Montaigne or the rue du Faubourg Saint-Honor.

Armani, Chanel, Dior, Lacroix, Pierre Cardin, Yves Saint Laurent, Versace and Kenzo are just a few of the big names for those with deep pockets, while many smaller boutiques and shopping centres provide more affordable fashions for anyone wanting fantastic styles without the fantastic price tags, and there is always the ready-to-wear shows coming up in October to look forward to.

When it comes to buying swimwear keep in mind, look out for the one-piece swimsuit One-piece suits can sometimes be great for plus size women, but dont assume it works for everyone. If you have larger legs and a smaller torso or if you have very broad shoulders, a one-piece might actually emphasize those things. A bikini may be better for you so dont rush to cover up just because youre a little fuller.

Paris is abuzz with preparation for Haute Couture Week which kicks off on Monday. As international press, editors and high brow couture clients prepare to enjoy the bi-annual extravaganza of fashion supersights, from the likes of John Galliano at Dior, Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel, Valentino and Julien Macdonald at Givenchy, some fashionistas are simply gearing up for a week of seriously glamorous parties.

First on the agenda is ex-Scherrer designer Ritu Beri, who will get everybody in the mood with a soiree on Sunday night to celebrate her autumn/winter collection. Next up, ex-Yves Saint Laurent muse Loulou de la Falaise is expecting 200 of her very closest friends and press pals to celebrate the jewellery range she designed to accompany the couture line that she launched in February. Wednesday night's highlight will be a glittering bash thrown by the Gucci-owned Boucheron label - expect a full Gucci turnout, including Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen and Tom Ford. Finally, Paris' fashion governing body, the Chambre Syndicale, will host the final evening's gala which will see between 700-800 of the world's most fashionable players sipping the best Champagne and nibbling canapés in the gardens of the Sacretariat. Gucci: From Handbags To Riches

By Joyce Dietzel

Perhaps Guccio Gucci never realized the extent at which his handbags will be adored by millions of women all across the world. From the time that he first opened his store in 1921 to the present time, he would not have
imagined that his bags would stand the test of time and become one of the icons of the history of the fashion world and would give birth to a fashion house.

In fact, there are some who would kill for a Gucci handbag whether it be the new stocks that have come fresh from the designers notebooks or those that have already made the rounds of various thrift shops. No doubt, there is much value placed in an authentic gucci handbag, whether it be 15 years old or 15 minutes old.

Guccio Gucci started with a small luggage and saddlery company in Florence, where he sold leather goods that are exclusively made by Florence craftsmen. Owning to the support of sophisticated international clients, Gucci opened another shop, this time in Via Condotti, Rome. Though quite popular with consumers, it was only in 1947 that the first Gucci handbag attained an icon status with the first handbag to have a bamboo handle. The handbag, introduced by Gucci, was a great success with the Gucci handbag symbol of striped webbing derived from saddle girth. The striped webbing symbol has become so distinctive and so identified with the Gucci products, whether handbags or clothes that it made into a trademark

Another icon Gucci handbag was introduced a couple of years after the moccasin handbag with metal bit. When Gucci died in 1953, the company was riding its high especially with the opening of its first New York store,
Hollywood stars Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn and Peter Sellers brought the brand into stardom but it was First lady Jackie Kennedy that popularized the bag that has come to be known today as the Jackie O.

After expansion in the United States and in Europe, Gucci opened his first stores in Asia, targeting Asian fashion capitals, Hong Kong and Tokyo in the seventies. In the early 80s, Maurizio Gucci took on the leadership and in 1984, Domenico de Sole became the president of Gucci America. Shares of the Gucci company was sold and de Sole became the CEO of the group NV.

Today, Gucci handbags are still enjoying the adoration and adulation of many loyalists. In fact, their recent hobo bag designs are one of the top selling handbags in the market today. Even with its really obscene price, women line up the stores and even reserve their stocks of really great Gucci designs.

In 1990, Tom Ford took on the reins of Creative Director and brought the Gucci name back into the limelight with his great designs and innovations. Tom Fords first collection was a really big success not only in the
American runways but also across the globe. Not only does Gucci been producing handbags, shoes and clothes, the company has also acquired a small but profitable watch company, Severin Montres in 1997.

The year 1998 saw the Gucci brand riding high with its being named European Company of the Year by the European Business Press Federation. In 2004, when Tom Ford left the company, Frida Giannini was appointed to head the Accessories collection, which would preside over the design and development of handbags. And even in 2005, when Gucci appointed Giannini as creative director for womens ready to wear, she still continued her responsibilities with accessories and Gucci handbags.

Are Gucci Handbags Worth The Money?

By Lee MacRae

Designer handbags and purses today come in a large variety of designs and styles that allow women who buy them to express their individual fashion sense. You can easily find a designer back that suits you from casual handbags to fabric handbags or contemporary designs. But designer handbags also cost much more than a bag or purse from a five and dime shop. The obvious question is are you just buying fashion sense or do you also get value?

It's obvious that most people today want to make sure their hard earned money is used wisely. They need to know if a Gucci bag is worth the expanse. Will it last. The short answer is, yes they are worth. Why?

The answer is - designer bag these days are made from high-grade materials. A leather bag or purse by Harley Davidson will use top grade leather that is long-lasting, supple and very beautiful in appearance. So, although you will be paying for the name you will also be paying for fine quality. Still not convinced?

Want a hint to know what you're getting? Top designer handbags will always have a fine lining material inside. Cheaper handbags will not. Makers of lower grade products look for every possible way to keep costs down. As a result, you will find cheaper linings and even cheaper hardware. Avoid these like the plague. Full grain leather products are made from top grade natural hides without imperfections. Top grain leather's are extremely long wearing. It is extremely durable and over years of use, it darkens to its full beautiful patina in various stages. Full-grained handbags are often made from the skins of young cattle and are prized for their smooth texture and fine quality.

In conclusion, you may pay a lot for a handbag by Michael Kors or Fendi but what you're getting for your money is a handbag of the finest quality and it will be with you for a lifetime if you desire. Even if you need to save for a bit of time, the designer handbag is a wise investment.
